Blues with John Putnam This workshop is for musicians unfamiliar with playing in a group. We will work with a blues based repertoire to identify how we can create a unified group statement. We will address the role each instrument plays, and how we then communicate with each other on the bandstand. We will discuss how to develop a successful solo and also what it means to play in the pocket. Issues of performance will also be covered. This workshop is ideal for those that want to be in a performing workshop but want to explore and refine their band chops first. The first songs selected are mostly from the golden era of the blues 50s and 60s. These selections will include the music of B.B. King, Albert King, or Freddie King, Howling Wolf, Willie Dixon. We will start of with these selections and then open selections to blues based tunes chosen by participants.

This workshop rehearses for 4 consecutive Tuesdays. However, unlike the traditional Studio workshop, our group will not perform at a local area club. This allows us more flexibility to probe musical issues that might be dismissed were we to have the pressure of preparing for a performance.
